History
David A. Ickes discovered his photography interest during his high school years in western Pennsylvania, north of Pittsburgh. In 1965, he pursued a visual arts program in university studies of Public relations, Advertising and Communications. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration at Youngstown State University, Ohio and relocated to Philadelphia, PA to start his professional career. Nikon School of Photography provided an in-depth knowledge of photo image composition, lighting techniques and camera equipment.
His early career included several years at an Advertising graphics firm in Philadelphia. He decided to accept an opportunity to work at WHYY-TV, Channel 12 to utilize his public relations and communication training. Drexel University hired Mr. Ickes as Assistant Director of Alumni events. His new marketing position lead him to travel to Europe for the purpose of organizing study and travel abroad programs for Drexel students. This gave Mr. Ickes a wonderful opportunity to expand his photo portfolio to include historical city and scenic landscape views. He made plans to spend six months traveling throughout Europe and North Africa to expand his photo works. His extensive portfolio includes vistas from Ireland, England, France, Italy, Scotland, Wales, Holland, Austria, Germany and Morocco.
Increasing demands for color works of landscape and seascape art resulted in travels to Europe and North Africa, as well as photographic trips throughout the United States and Canada. In addition to seascapes along the Mediterranean, works include scenes from Nova Scotia to Cape May to Key West. He is also well known for Philadelphia photographs including a National Democratic Convention program cover, Press Accreditation for the City of Philadelphia for Tall Ships Celebration, a Philadelphia Tourist Guide cover and sports photos in PHILLIES yearbook.
David's photographic experience ranges from capturing celebration events and distinct portraits, with an eye for scenic landscapes and cityscapes, as well as on-the-field action sports photography. He enjoys freelance photo pass access to PHILLIES baseball and Philadelphia 76er’s professional sports games. Diversified Photography was established in 1983, through an affiliation with PHILLIES Baseball and Philadelphia Stars (American football), as well as an interest in visually documenting important events. He became recognized for his master photography skills and dedicates his career to this pursuit.
Diversified Photography’s photo artwork has been on display in Albers Galleries, Philadelphia Registry and Market Group, as well as the Philadelphia Tourist Bureau and Chamber of Commerce. Scenic photography has been purchased by corporate clients including CIGNA Insurance Company of North America for offices in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New England, Kentucky and Florida, as well as IBM Corporation offices. Photographs have been published in Park Avenue Traveler, Philadelphia Magazine, University of Tennessee Free Press and BMW Owners News. Mr. Ickes’ interest in the local rock and roll J. C. Dobbs music scene has resulted in candid performance photographs of popular musicians, including George Thorogood, Bo Diddly, Dwight Yocum, Robert Hazard and many others. He was a staff photographer at the Live Aid Philadelphia concert for excellent photo results of Mick Jagger, Tina Turner and many other noted entertainers. Mr. Ickes currently has a studio in Bala Cynwyd, PA. He specializes in wedding and mitzvah celebrations.
